PIMA COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY BRAND

A brand is more than a logo.

A good brand involves creating a solid messaging strategy and visual identity that gives people a special feeling about the branded company. It helps that organization connect to their audiences at multiple touch points— increasing value, boosting visibility, and building awareness.

Pima County Public Library (PCPL) is a large, urban library serving an area about the size of Massachusetts. There are 26 branches in the system, and 500 staff serve about one million people. As the lead in a year-long PCPL brand development project, I guided our team through the creation of both verbal and visual deliverables. Using market research from Orange Boy, Inc., we identified key audiences. Library staff and the Governing Board helped to articulate our personality with their answers to a survey. I assisted in writing a new set of Library mission, vision, and values—which informed a positioning statement,  boilerplate information, a tagline, and key messaging. The logo, fonts, graphic elements, and photographic guidelines were the supporting visual brand components. The end result was a brand that resonates with staff and our stakeholders, community partners, media, and the public.
